Using collage to generate new ideas

Image
Although these aren't collages of designs, or design elements I would use. I feel these collages are able to capture the feel of a landscape. I hadn't realised how much I enjoyed collaging until I created these recently. I find hands on crafting really therapeutic and being able to move all the pieces around before sticking them down helps me to visualise the finished collage. I think this would be a useful technique for representing the 'Genus Loci' of a landscape and representing this in a digestible form.

Painting a bouquet I made at work using inks and watercolour

Image
This is the bouquet I was inspired by!  When i'm not at university I work as a florist in a local flower shop. This is where I first started learning my plant names! I love this job whole heartedly as I love playing around with composition and seeing where focal points should be and which colours clash and what structures complement each other. I also love the hands on aspect of working with something in real time and problem solving as I go with a "brief" and a budget. There's also something so beautiful about working with something that is only beautiful for a short period of time before it decays.  I was looking at photos of my bouquets when I decided it would be fun to try and paint one. I chose this bouquet as I love the maroon/ red colour scheme and the grasses. I used inks and water colour paints and then once both had dried, I went over the top with glitter watercolour paints to add subtle highlights to a few areas. I also used a shimmery white to draw the lis...

Placing my model into a landscape

Image
Following on from my last blog post, I was tasked to place my models into 3 environments of my choosing.  This first image is definitely my favourite. I think while designing this I was really craving a warm holiday! I created this landscape using my imagination and collaging in  Photoshop. My model is acting as a multi-level diving structure set in a very tropical jungle location. I really enjoy creating visualisations like this on Photoshop, it is one of my favourite elements of design, seeing the vision in my head come to life! This second collage is imagining my model as a modern sandcastle ornament in a fish tank. I think it works well at this small scale and placing it in the background with vibrant fish in the foreground creates more depth.  Lastly I placed my model in a countryside wedding venue, where the model acts as a chapel type building where this couple are soon to be married. I think this is the weakest of my three collages, based on composition and the ex...

Model making using prompts

Image
In a recent lecture we were asked to create quick models out of A3 paper based on a series of prompts.  These were as follows: Folding/ pleating I really enjoyed making this model as I used to make concertinas like this when I was in school, I think it works really well as an actual structure/ building as the fan shape mixed with the peaks and troughs of the folds make very interesting lighting. I feel like this building if it were softened in its edges, would be something an architect like Zaha Hadid would design.  Other model  A "Crash" This model was probably the prompt that stunted me the most as a crash can be interpreted in many different ways. This was very evident in the work produced by my peers using the same font. I wanted to focus on the visual representation of what I think the onomatopoeia 'crash' would look like as opposed to representing an actual crash. The spirals represent wind and chaos and the sharp zig zags represent the impact. I really enjoyed ...

Personality metrics

Image
For my professional practice module we were asked to take a personality test to see where our persona strengths and weaknesses lay. This is where I found out I have an ENFP-A personality type. Below ar emu personality traits: It stated that enthusiasm and creativity are my superpowers which is a very useful in this field but also that this could be my downfall as I move from one thought to another very quickly. Unfortunately this is very true, I need to learn to slow down and complete one idea before bouncing onto the next. It also said that my idealism coupled with the empathy I have would make me a powerful advocate for things I believe in. This is another good trait to have in this line of work as passion is the driver of designing usable and fitting spaces.  Lastly it stated my stregnths include; creative problem-solving, inspiring energy, adaptability and building connections.  This personality test has definitely been eye opening for me as although I know they are...

Using inks for observational drawing

Image
Above are two recent pages out of my sketchbook. This is an area of my grandparents garden that I really love. I used inks in order to experiment with interpretive brush markings. I then outlined key areas with a black brush pen very loosely. I think this gives the first painting above a very "lived in" appearance. I also chose to use gold shimmery watercolour as a way to add highlights and focal points in the pampas grass heads. This was really effective and I will use this method in future drawings.  Inks are something I really enjoy using as they are very fluid and mean that I don't get to focused on the details of an artwork, however if I wanted to add details this is also possible with inks as they are very layer-able.

My Petcha Kutcha presentation - Siranna by NEOM

Image
For my Petcha Kutcha I have chosen to focus on a recently revealed architectural project by NEOM, named Siranna. Situated on the Gulf of Aqaba coastline. This is a part of a broader Neom project, which seeks to create a sustainable city that redefines urban living by embracing technological advancements and marries this with sustainability and protecting the environment.    Siranna is a tourist destination that houses a 65 key hotel as well as 35 exclusive residence. It was designed to release visitors from their digital conscious, as the architect Woods Bagot felt this is a pressing issue in today’s society.  I chose this story as I am really inspired by the work NEOM Is doing, regardless of whether this site does end up being built I think just the proposal and the ingenuity is something that deserves recognition as there isn’t anyone else pushing for such futuristic and sustainable design in the current architecture and landscape architecture space. One ...
