Alney concept and base plan development



Above is a development zoning plan for my Soluna site. This is where my site plan began. Very loosely and not to scale.

In order to get my head around spacing and sizing of elements I roughly drew up this master plan in coloured pencil. I feel like there is still a lot of work needed as the planting is currently in very isolated pockets as opposed to being intgrated within the wider site. 
I really liked the softness of this colour scheme but I felt the colours did not match the life and energy that Soluna has. This masterplan felt too calm and muted. 


I made this master plan on photoshop using the bucket fill tool and brushes. I did really like the style of this master plan but felt it was not right for the energy of this site. It was too bold and blocky.
This masterplan was definitley working towards what I wanted, but felt really washed out and the colours felt muddy and not compatible.

This is what my final master plan looked like. Of all of my renditions I think this one was definitly my strongest. I feel this really portrays the sanctuary that is Soluna.

  This water feature really captured my interest as I have never seen a water feature that appears so fog-like. It really creates a surreal atmosphere.  “For three seasons of the year the nozzles emit a dematerializing mist while in winter steam from the university heating plant creates a fog around the fountain. ”   (PWP, n.d.) This therefore makes the space able to be used throughout the seasons. In the summer months the mist will have a cooling effect on anyone that sits close by and in the winter the steam from the heating plant will warm the surrounding area very slightly. Whenever I think to add a water feature to one of my designs, I always choose a generic fountain or rill etc. This design uses the surrounding landscape to create a very functional while also eery and mysterious feature. Kim Wilkie - Orpheus at Boughton

  I chose to look at the designer Kim Wilkie because I was fascinated by the strong use of mathematical symbols and geometry in this garden. This is not how I personally choose to approach design. However, I am drawn in by the meaning behind his design choices. For example, the inverted pyramid “Orpheus” that descends 7m below the surrounding grass was built to reflect the raised mound next to it “Mount Olympus”. People can walk down this pyramid and look into the shallow pool at the bottom that reflects the sky above. I have recently learnt about labyrinths and their use for promoting peace and reflection, although this isn’t a labyrinth, I’m sure it has a similar effect. Wilkie named this inverted pyramid after a famous musician in Greek mythology, who when his wife died, he went into the underworld to try to reclaim her.
