Dissertation initial ideas - mind maps

Image
For my dissertation, titled:  Chromatic Biophilia: The capacity of natural place-based colour palettes, abstracted from spatial and ecological context, to independently evoke an innate biophilic response. I began mapping out each of the sections I felt were important to include in my literature review. After this, I chose to break these sections into their subsections and the topics I would need to research. This, therefore, put me in a good position for beginning the writing of my dissertation, as I could create sentence starters for each of the sections and then fill them later with research and quotations. I also picked up some books fro mthe library that I feel may be relevant in my research.

Climate Positive Design- A Petcha Kutcha Presentation

Image
This is me during my presentation.  The first question I will answer is … What is the Carbon cycle: The carbon cycle is the process by which carbon atoms are constantly exchanged among the  earths  atmosphere, oceans, land and living organisms. The total amount of carbon on Earth is fixed but is continuously moving between these reservoirs- known as carbon sinks. The Carbon Budget According to the latest Global Carbon Budget, we have roughly 200 billion  tonnes  of CO₂ left to emit if we want to stay under 1.5 degrees. The built environment is responsible for about three-quarters of global emissions - and landscapes, materials, and infrastructure make up over a third of that. Every design decision we make contributes to part of that global budget. A climate positive landscape is one that over its lifetime sequesters more carbon than it emits. Made up of operational and embodied carbon. 36% of the built environment carbon emissions come from outside the buildin...

Alney Island- Intial ideas

Attraction Soluna holds quarterly fashion/ runway events. This is its largest attraction in terms of crowd. However, at other times of the year there are; natural workshops, art and sculpture exhibitions, soundscapes, holistic events, educational workshops etc. There's something for all ages. Audience Festival audience is 20-50, with fans of couture fashion, creatives, people drawn to immersion and ecotourists.  The surrounding site also caters towards these people, but also a wider age range and with wider interests.  Scale This site is designed to grow and shrink as needed, with grassland meadows that can be mown to create a range of sized spaces.  The scale of Soluna fashion events is estimated at 3,000 attendees. Gate entry Soluna fashion events are paid events. Due to the nature of them being couture fashion shows, ticket prices will be £30.  For premium ticketing, drinks, meal etc. will be included in the ticket pricing.  For non-festival entry, there is n...

Alney Island- Site visit

Image
This week, as a cohort, we went on a site visit to Alney Island. This is the site location of our design project this semester and the next. Alney Island is (location).   It is currently a very run-down and overgrown site, with its main use being for dog walking and cattle grazing.  Due to its close proximity to the Gloucester Quays, it is a prime location for the development of a festival, as per our brief request.  Because of the site's currently very wild and natural composition, my initial thoughts are to use this within the theme of my festival, either as a “back to nature” festival or a festival based on the concept of “biophilia”. This would also make it easier for me to spend my £20m budget on more key areas of the site, as opposed to using it to clear the existing nature and build more rigid infrastructure.
