Designing a freeform modern perennial garden

In a recent design lecture we were asked to pick one of three garden styles:
1. Elegant modern formal
2. Freeform modern perennial
3. Dry garden
I chose to design based on "Freeform modern perennial", we had 5 minutes to come up with a design and could only use thick black pen so once we made a mark we had to stick to it. I really like some elements of this design like the curved pathway and the perennial planting, but the overall design looks very stiff and there is a lot of empty space in the middle.

After completing our first design we then had a further 5 minutes to redesign using the elements we liked and swapping out things we feel didn't quite work. I liked the water feature ideas but felt the previous pond and fountain were to structured so chose to swap these for more organic shapes. However, I did keep the pathway and the organic planting.
This is a method of designing I will definitely be using again as I like how fast i'm able to produce ideas and also how quick I am able to improve a design.
