A short statement explaining my final design for the 'Fantasy Garden' brief
For my fantasy garden my brief was as follows;
Celebrity- Alex Turner (songwriter for the Artic Monkeys)
Colour- Sea blue
Music Genre- Ambient
Place- Findochty (A small coastal town in Scotland)
I knew from the beginning that I wanted this fantasy garden to have a water element, seeing as the colour I was allocated was sea blue and Findochty is a coastal town. Within the brief I decided that I would design this as if Alex Turner was my client and I was creating a peaceful oasis for him to escape to, to create and write music. Therefore, a feeling of security and homeliness was extremely important to me, I liked the idea of Hygge, a Scandinavian concept defined as ‘ a cosy contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality’. This goes hand in hand with the location I was given as Scotland is a very wet and grey place for most of the year, therefore further evoking a sense of cosiness when one is inside looking out. This also explains my choice of large glass windows. Seeing as Findochty is a town located on very steep cliffs I chose to include a cliff as an element in my design, placing the building at the top of said cliff. This gives a really interesting vantage point as one is able to look out above the tree tops but also see the water below if this is a desire. Planting wise I would choose very dark green and purple foliage with white focal points, I think this would create a very ethereal and mysterious feeling, Ideal for creativity, without the planting being scary. I would also plant highly scented planting around the house such as lavender, chamomile and lilac, as this would further induce a calm homely feeling in the location. Water, as I stated previously was a very important element for me in this design. I initially begun designing with a still water source in mind such as a lake. But on further designing I chose to also include a waterfall. The sound of running water has been proven to create a great sense of calm in humans, as is being able to see said water running.
Overall, I think I met my design goals and brief well with this design and look forward to furthering my development through a 3-D model.
